Programming note: from May 2 until May 13, I’ll be in the process of flying to and then settling down in China for the summer. During this time, I’ll be digging up some classic content from the archives, and sharing it with you in the form of theme-related posts. And don’t worry — I’ll be back on May 16. Promise! 😉

It’s the Labor Day holiday in China, and that makes me think of how labor and love work together in China. After all, I met my husband through work.

Today, I’m sharing a roundup of my favorite posts about love in the workplace in China — from breaking up during business hours to why you should never consider customers your lovers (yikes!):

My Heart is Shut Away, My Chinese Boyfriend is Gone. If you’re going to fall in love at work, be careful who you choose. I fell for a man who sat right next to me — and when we broke up, I had to face the pain every single day.

Negotiating For My Life in China. When I suddenly lost my job and visa, my Chinese boyfriend John stood by my side and even helped me negotiate with the Chinese CEO.

Customers Are Our Lovers. Customers and foreign copywriters in China write the darnedest things in the office. A personal favorite. 😉

What are your stories of love and work in China?

  1. Hi,
I’ve been following your blog and I am thankful you give us people interested in China so much information. Thank you, I love your personal blog, gives a natural insight of China for foreigners.
I have just finished my degrees (translation and interpreting mandarin- spanish) and East Asian Studies (China itinerary) and I am planning on going to China, find a job, and maybe settle there for a few years, if I am lucky.
I feel lucky enough of having your blog for now to help me dream about my life in China

  2. I also want to say its a bad idea to fall in love with someone from your class and then break up because then you have to see them everyday as well, I went through that with an ex boyfriend and it wasn’t fun.

  3. Have a safe trip to you other home!!! Hope you have a fabulous trip and get to eat lots of the yummy food of China!! I leave tomorrow for Canada from China and I am so jealous you are coming and I am going!!!!

    Safe journey!

  4. I have this feeling that you belong in China more than in the States. I don’t know why, but I do. Anyway, it’s nice to know that you are back in China! Will of course, continue to read your blog.

  5. I wish you the best with your trip to China. I am excited for you.

I just wanted to say thanks for putting me in the blogroll. I really do appreciate it.

  6. I was concerned when I started dating my wife because we were coworkers. We also had to keep it a secret because the bosses didn’t want the Chinese employees socializing with the foreigners–I certainly didn’t want her to get fired because of me.
