Pub’d on China Daily: Christmas tree stays for Spring Festival

China Daily just published another one of my columns in their newspaper today — it’s titled Christmas tree stays for Spring Festival. Here’s an excerpt:

I have a January confession to make – my Christmas tree is still up.

Back in Cleveland, Ohio, where I grew up, this is not the norm. By Jan 6, most people have already packed away their ornaments and let garbage collectors remove the dried-out firs and spruces that were once dazzling in their living rooms. To them, the holiday season is over.

But my Christmas tree remains for a very good reason. To me, it’s also a symbol of the holiday season and my holidays aren’t finished yet.

  1. Dear Jocelyn,
I have followed your column since i found it a couple of years ago. Your piece about the Christmas tree rings oh so true! My first year in China I was teaching at Qingdao University. The university hotel had Christmas decorations still up April 1st, April Fool’s Day!

BTW, my daughter lives outside of Kent with her family; I just noticed you are from Stow?!
P.S. I have noticed plenty of attractive men in China of all ages!

    1. Hey Megan, thanks for the comment, and appreciate that you enjoyed the column (and find plenty of attractive men in China of all ages)! I’m from the Cleveland area, but I have family who reside in Stow — and actually some family who live close to Kent as well.

  2. So cool to have your article published Jocelyn, what an amazing accomplishment! 🙂

I definitely feel that emptiness once all of the decorations are put away, the house looks so empty. We usually need to keep our tree up until January 6th for the Epiphany, but, we tend to take it down sooner. My husband never had a tree in his home, or decorations, until I came around. I guess I put a little bit of the Christmas spirit into him as well!

I feel like this time of year is very hard on our wallets, with Christmas, then CNY, we are always broke afterwards!

Looking forward to seeing more of your published articles!

    1. Thank you so much Maria! It’s good that you’ve initiated your husband into these Christmas traditions. And yes, know what you mean, this time of year is tough financially for many people, especially those of us who get hit twice with the holidays!
