Valentine’s Day arrives this Tuesday, February 14. In honor of the day To give this deadline-weary writer a break from a long week, I’m pulling out some of my favorite Valentine-related content from the archives.

Ask the Yangxifu: Chinese Husband Forgot Valentine’s Day. “Basically, as Valentine’s Day passed without a hint of romance…I’ve been pouring over whether or not my western conditioning has been detrimental to my marriage.”

Mandarin Love: Chinese Phrases on Love and Destiny. I share some of my favorite Chinese idioms that invoke love and destiny. Might just come in handy on Tuesday. 😉

Ask the Yangxifu: Gifts for Chinese Valentine’s Day. For those of you who don’t know, China also has its own Valentine’s Day called Qixi, which lands on the seventh day of the seventh month of the lunar year. I discuss the holiday and possible gift ideas for your boyfriend or husband.

China and Its Oh So Romantic Christmas. Okay, you’re probably thinking, Jocelyn has really lost it because she’s pulling out a Christmas entry in the middle of February. But, Christmas in China feels a lot like Valentine’s Day — read for yourself and decide.

The Double Happiness Archives. Enjoy one of the real-life stories of Western women and Chinese men in love from the archives. (And for more stories, also see my lists of books and movies that feature couples of Chinese men and Western women.)

Happy Valentine’s Day — or as they say in China, qíngrénjié kuàilè (情人节快乐)!

    Happy valentines day!

I am torn between getting iPad 2 for valentines gift or getting iPad 3 later. What is your suggestion ? Time is running out, may be iPad 2 for now ?

@cvaguy: do you want to be romantic or practical? personally, I think that a box of chocolates and cinema or sth like that would be ok. I mean, maybe I’d feel awkward and maybe even disappointed if my bf would give me an ipad, no matter 1, 2 3 or any other number.

First time commenting, but i am finding your website to be very helpful in my new relationship with my gorgeous chinese boyfriend! I just wanted to say, that me and my love have decided that this year i will prepare something special for valentines day, and he will prepare something special for 7.7. I am not too fond of giving lavish gifts, so this year i plan to prepare a big dinner, with many of his home specialties. 🙂

Barbara – I got her flowers and a card with my painting in it, hope that covers romantic part. She does not like Chocolate but she likes to read news paper. iPad would let her read news papers online.
What you say reminded me that she would not care about 2, 3 etc. Only I do. So I will just get her iPad 2. Thanks for the suggestion.

Buying roses is one thing but if you can grow your own roses that will have more meaning ( lots of hard work). Take her to a SUSHI restaurant. I know I know what you’re thinking but next yr take her to a different place. Don’t go to the same place!

Bruce – How can you grow roses in this time of season without a green house ? Instead, I custom made the card with my own personal touch and she always enjoy my painting 🙂

CVAguy, damn why are you sooo lucky? 🙂
Some women are easy to please. Other women don’t want you to kiss her on the lips, just force one on her. Mostly women want to be loved and appreciated that’s all. You just have to know your woman on giving gifts. Some will be happy if you take them to French Restaurant and some just want it simple. ” kiss me you fool!” lol 🙂

Bruce – I just grew my rose … I made it from paper, Origami Rose 🙂 She knows buying roses would be too easy for me. I like to surprise her and see how she reacts when she wakes up.

She is the one who likes kiss. I like cuddle more. But I don’t do any of these in public. May be some day.

    CVAguy,

giving flowers is not about real or not real. It’s the meaning. I do planting garden, trees and bonsai for my personal hobbies. I can show you how to grow flowers etc. Kiss her more often. WOmen always want to feel loved and feel young again.

    @Orange_rain,

Does he like grilled tuna or pan fried salmon or white seabass ( lots of oil/omega 3) w/ asparagus. Maybe New Zealand rack of lamb w/ garlic or grilled fillet mignon w/sweet potato or spicy spagetti ( asian style). beef salad ( zesty , sour , spicy fresh chili mixed with lime and fishsauce ) or multi herbs salad. or thai basil stir fried chicken w/ rice . Dessert can be cheese cake or fried ice cream and rum ( light the rum at the table).

Not good enough for Valentine’s Day? 🙂

    Bruce hahahahahah lol

    Bruce,

thanks for the tips, he eats pretty much anything so I should try those dishes sometime! But today I dont want my cookings to end up into disaster so I propably choose safely some chicken dish, and for dessert I will make my mother’s blueberry pie (and strawberry milkshake because I know he loves that the most):)

I love to cook . Your ingredients should compromise each other like a marriage . The fire and the cooking temperature should be extremely hot hot hot!If you are a good cook, everything should be tasty . When I cook, you will see flames, fire and smoke flying everywhere. I’ve invested a lot of money into my kitchen, outdoor kitchen( my favorite!) and cookwares. have fun

I’m very poor cook, so our compromise is usually that my husband cooks and I wash the dishes.. But he really appreciates the times when I’m cooking for him. Now we only have Sundays to eat together because of my husband’s work, but soon we will hopefully be both home for the dinner time so I have more chance to experiment with new dishes:)

That’s fine! It doesn’t matter who cooks as long as you two are a team.
