What a Trump Presidency Means for Interracial Couples

Stunned and shocked. That about sums up my reaction to the election this past Tuesday. Well, when the United States of America elects a xenophobic, racist, misogynistic, homophobic narcissist (see if you can say that five times fast), I don’t know how else you can feel about it.

I don’t normally discuss politics. This isn’t a political blog and I’ve always felt content to keep my political leanings off these pages. But this election is different. Trump stands as an affront to things that matter to those of us in interracial relationships – especially those that cross borders. He has denigrated people of color. He is against immigration and immigrants. He was endorsed by white supremacist groups. He is a misogynist who has admitted to sexually assaulting women.

That’s a lot to swallow. I know.

I could talk about how and why this happened in 2016 (cue the #ThisIs2016 hashtag), but I think there are far better reflections on that elsewhere. (See also this post from fellow blogger Autumn regarding the election.)

Instead, I feel it’s worth considering the question on many people’s minds. What does this mean for interracial couples and their allies?

I don’t have a crystal ball to gaze into the future and imagine what a Trump Presidency will do to America. But I do know the next four years are going to be really tough to witness. That feeling of dread still hasn’t left me since I learned the election results.

At the same time, I have a lot of experience processing personally catastrophic events.

A university completely screwed my husband and his future – and by association, screwed me too – in the most reprehensible and unimaginable way. In the wake of this, I seriously considered committing suicide for the first time in my life. Yes, suicide. The university had wrongfully robbed my husband of his career and future, everything we had hoped for together. Was there anything else worth living for?

It took at least a week before I could push through all of the devastation, before I could see a path forward. My husband and I ultimately decided we were not content to just accept what happened. We would take action. We would fight this injustice. Why? Because we knew deep in our hearts that what happened was wrong. Because we were determined to never give up on our dreams.

This positive momentum of this decision uplifted me. Even though this wasn’t what I had expected to work on in late 2013 and beyond, this decision gave me something to live for. We rallied together and, over the years, our optimism and hard work paid off in unexpected ways (such as gaining the support of leaders in the American psychology field). We’ve never been closer to justice than now, even though it took us over three years to get here.

I’ve learned the value of standing up for yourself and what you believe in, even when things look dreadful.

Here’s what I hope the Trump Presidency means for interracial couples. Let this election be your rallying cry to stand up for your beliefs. To champion and protect the rights of everyone, including people of color, immigrants, women, and the LGBT community. I know it’s a total cliché, but we really do have more power than we imagine. Believe in yourself and remember that your voice matters more than ever.

I know it’s not going to be easy, because I’ve been there. You’ll need some time to process this all. And chances are, you’ll need something like meditation, exercise, therapy, chocolate, or, in my case, an evening with Ang Lee’s version of Sense and Sensibility (seriously, that movie never fails to calm me down).

But once you’re done, come see me. Because we’ve got some work to do.

  1. Hey, thanks for the shoutout! There will probably be more political posts coming, as my state (California) is getting all revved up about leaving the U.S. and taking the 6th largest economy in the world with us. Twitter is a crazy mass of politics, pain, and rage right now. Feel free to come along on my feed for the journey.

Alternatively, it’s nice and quiet out in the woods. I would kind of like to be there right now and so I absolutely understand the need for any LGBTQ person or person of color to go into a cave and grieve.

My Chinese-American husband and I will be traveling to more conservative states this winter. We have NEVER experienced overt racism in the U.S. Not in Kentucky, not even in the southwestern corner of Virginia! We’ll see if the racists speak up now that Trump has embolden them. And if they do? Well… “Come at me, bro. I’m spoiling for a fight!”

Because, hell, yeah, I’m with Jocelyn. WE FIGHT.

  2. I am shocked and appalled by trump as president. I have a happa son who is not even a year old and who is Chinese and Jewish ancestry. I am scared of thinking how the world will be like for him. Next week I want to start a feature on my blog for as long as trump is president, I will call it ‘what books should trump read and what he should learn from them’ wish me luck

  3. I am the mother of a Chinese daughter that will graduate from high school this year, and I am deeply frightened for her and her future, as well as the future of all children in this country. What will it mean to education to have an anti-science, anti-intellectual bigot of a president, and to have his bigoted party in charge of all three branches of government?

And by the way, as a resident of the state of Indiana in the United States, I can tell you that v.p. elect Mike Pence is bad, bad news, far worse than Trump, even.

When my daughter woke up the morning after the election to find out that Trump had won, she was afraid she would be unable to go to college. I assured her that it takes longer than four years to dismantle the higher education system in this country (despite my private doubts about that), but we are updating our passports, and thinking ahead about foreign institutions for her PhD.

In the meantime, I am wondering how to explain what has happened in this country with the election of a bigot and racist to this country’s highest office of service to her Chinese family (I found her birth family three years ago). Of course, they know better than I do about corrupt, evil governments.

Hang on, people, it’s going to be a four tough years ahead for anyone who lives in the U.S. and is a decent person.

    1. There is a “sanctuary” for your Chinese daughter if you are pushed into a corner—the state of Hawaii. There Asians are in a slight majority and because of the racial mixing that has been going on for centuries, all the races there get along rather well. I experienced my “rebirth” there and regain my self esteem after being discriminated against substantially in California. After witnessing that Asians in Hawaii could stand up tall as much as any whites and not be antagonized because of my racial background, I gained my confidence after a few years. I attribute that regained confidence to my ability to become a project manager who competently directed and supervised over 30 white employees after returning to southern California.

  4. This evening Elizabeth Warren said something similar: “We’ve got work to do.”

This morning I was thinking of another option, something kind of zen–acceptance, kind thoughts, relax and dedicate myself to writing. I was with my writing group this morning. We tossed around the possibility that he might not be as bad as he says he will be. He might do some good things–improve the infrastructure, for example. Maybe we should go along.

But no. He is as bad as he showed us he was. We need to fight him every step of the way. Jocelyn says, “we really do have more power than we imagine.” Yes. But only if we exercise that power from the beginning. Don’t wait until he’s too far along in his efforts to destroy our democracy and replace it with an autocracy.

This evening, Autumn posted an excellent essay by Masha Gessen from NYBooks.com. “Autocracy: Rules for Survival.” Read it early. Don’t wait until Trump blocks articles that criticize him.

  5. Excellent post Jocelyn, very positive. Thank you for burning the torch of hope, strength and optimism alive. Please let me know how the case goes. Vyara

  6. “The happiness of those who want to be popular depends on others; the happiness of those who seek pleasure fluctuates with moods outside their control; but the happiness of the wise grows out of their own free acts.”

Hope this ancient wisdom gives you some help.

  7. My only advice? Use your 2nd amendment rights and arm yourselves. AND go to the shooting range to both practice and to make it visible that you are armed.

If 1992 Los Angeles riots has taught Asians anything it is only ourselves who will defend us.

I expect racial violence to spike as it did after the BREXIT vote.

You might say I’m being dramatic but when the mob is breaking down your door you sure as hell will wish you were armed. This isn’t just empty rhetoric either. 160 years ago during Tai’ping rebellion my ancestors were practitioners of martial arts and kept crossbows. I exist today because of their action which allowed them to survive.

This Chinese lady is good example for 2nd amendment right. It is always good idea to count on yourself for any challenge. I have my own conceal permit and pocket weapon in my state. With packed arm in your pocket, your confidence goes up.

But there is no need to be paranoid about Trump. I suspect Trump is only a business man in the heart, who should be a perfect politician for nation of shop keepers. There is no ideology/religion motivation for this kind of politician.

On the other hand, faith motivated politicians are different. Faith motivated politicians are on crusade to conquer the world according to their faith (ideology/religion). Politicians driven by the faith often led to disasters at end (ISIS, Taliban, Nazi, commies, neocons, more).

Britain is typical country run by interest-driven politicians for centuries. British politics is about national interest instead of ideology/religion. No wonder Napoleon labeled Britain as Nation of shop keepers who does not have any noble goal in them but profit/interest. From nations of shop keepers, you get quote like this from English politician “Nations have no permanent friends or allies, they only have permanent interests.”(Lord Palmerston quotes ) .

  9. in Chinese history, when the dynasty was going downhill, they always had incompetent emperors and then the dynasty imploded. Young Bush was bad, now this ????!!!! Could it be the higher power’s signal to the Americans that American will no longer be great and on the way down ??? time will tell ( how are the Americans going to pay off their $$$$$$$$$$$$$ debts ??

    1. The term “mainstream media” has essentially become meaningless–the right wing echo chamber is officially the new mainstream now. If anybody wants to disrgard facts they get to claim anything that disagrees with their rhetoric is now MSM or something. Its nothing more than the new anti-intellectualism. Confirmatiom bias has gone out of control in the new digital world…

  10. As an outsider, I think you should give Mr. Trump a little time and believe the system of the election is scientific and sensible because there are so many people out of the whole population who give their support and trust to him. He might be another Hitler in the eyes of some extremists, but he doesn’t live in an age where one or one government can easily control the thinking of the people, so it is unnecessary to worry about the future like in the ancient Chinese story that one from Kingdom Qi keeps worrying about himself with the fall of sky and makes himself a laughing stock for later generations.

    1. Trump isn’t the problem. Trump is merely a symptom.

There are many who think (wrongly) that Trump winning the election means that it
is open season against ethnic groups and that they can do this now (they can’t and shouldn’t)

  11. You’re better than this. This election was not about social issues. Racism, sexism, and social prejudices exist on both sides of the aisle….equally. Yes, equally.

This election was about economic issues. When you’re trying to figure out how to put food on the table when you’re required to pay ridiculous insurance premiums, you don’t care about racism, sexism, etc. You care about your family surviving. States like Ohio, Michigan, and Pennsylvania swung this election around. Those states are suffering. The government can NOT control your mind. They can, however, control taxes and put pressure on your employer who writes your paychecks.

I voted for neither Trump nor Clinton. I refuse to vote for either one. If being forced with those 2 choices, I would rather stay home and not vote at all.

We interracial couples have nothing to worry about for now. When economic issues take priority because the past several decades demonstrated nothing but the same corrupt corporate/government friendships have caused us to suffer regardless of race/ethnicity, then we have to focus on economic recovery as opposed to social issues first. When you’re hungry, like they are in parts of Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania (which handed the election to Trump), no one cares about social issues. Let’s start with the basics of survival first. Then, we can focus on other issues. That is the result of this election. Being a health care practitioner, I am seeing first hand how people are economically suffering. They’re not racist. They’re not sexist. They’re not homophobes. They are just trying to live day by day and paycheck by paycheck. And, the current economic situation is not helping them.

  12. Sorry I haven’t been around. Business has kept me very busy. But, I just recently read about your husband’s issues with ISU. Your husband seems to be on the right side of the argument. However, that is not what matters. Universities will not care because they are just like any other business. They will take what they can from their students (loan recipients) and as long they get paid. They could not possibly care less if the student succeeds or fails. Results are meaningless in today’s universities. That is why they spend more money in sports and student comfort than they do student achievement. They get paid regardless.

Your husband is intelligent. There are other avenues to publish his achievements in order to gain and promote more business for him. He’s obviously smart enough to handle it. He could start his own business. I can tell you from experience that results speak far more than “credentials”. There are ways to beat the corrupt system. You just have to be creative to overcome corruption.

  13. The comments here are ridiculous. Trump is not a racist. He’s against illegal immigration, and he wants security for all of us. I’m Asian and I voted for him. I’m fed up with the illegals being well taken care of while the rest of us hardworking taxpayers suffer. He’s not a politician, and that’s refreshing to me. No way would I vote for a lying corrupt politician like Hillary, and I’m not against having a woman as a president. Just tell me which country has open border policy…not Mexico or China that’s for sure. You people don’t want to hear the truth. In 2005 Hillary said herself she wanted a “physical barrier” between US and Mexico and she strongly objected to illegal immigration and gay marriage. Feel free to look up this video in youtube.com if you don’t believe me. She’s a big liar. When Trump said the same thing, they called him racist and xenophobic. It’s time for a big change to get rid of corrupt politicians and start paying attention to the hardworking taxpayers.

    1. Then why does the KKK support him? Whether he is a racist or just an opportunist pandering (which is possible that he’s not racist just the world’s boldest liar), then what is it about his message which has created a base of extremist nationalists?

An outsider who isn’t a politician sounds nice but why such an obvious crook con artist…

  14. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/12/world/middleeast/donald-trump-syria.html?_r=0

This is far better than Hillary’s foreign policy. In term of foreign policy, Hillary is very much into regime change just like neocons (so called compassionate conservatives). At least world peace has better chance.

Ideology (faith) driven politician is far more dangerous in international affairs. Hillary is committed to spread democracy around the world just like neocon. This is very reason that she would never see eye to eye with country like China, Russia or Iran.

  15. Buffett after Trump win: ‘100%’ optimistic about America

    https://youtu.be/auukuYuizq4

I am with Buffett and also optimistic about America with Trump as President. The negative political rhetorics are highly harmful to average people mind. That is how hatred is building up to the political enemy. Unfortunately the mass are easily manipulated by such political propaganda. Like sports team, you end up only believing your own side of rhetorics. Yes, average voters are easily brain washed by such repeated verbal bombardment.

In sales business, fear = sale. Fear factor is more powerful than positive factor to make customers buying into your bid. Example: this is last chance you can….. (fill the blank).

Only a few people like Buffett are able to see through the harmful impact of negative political campaigns. No wonder he became so wealthy because he was able resist mass hysteria in market psychologically.

  16. Politicians know the best way to succeed is to appeal to people’s most basic emotions and fears.
Reason and logic have very little to do with how a lot people react to many things.
An image or a sound-bite that would not stand up to any serious scrutiny often balloons into hysteria because people don’t want to examine a topic as it could force a degree of self-examination that may reveal uncomfortable truths.

If someone points out an obvious logical flaw to an an argument, the easiest (and most common) reaction is to shout, scream and use the old ‘if you are not for us, you are against us argument, or name-calling and labeling.

A black and white world is easier to deal with, hence appealing to people’s most basic worries about the future.

  17. Trump or not, racism is a big problem with white Americans as I have always said and if you are an interracial couple you are better off living in Asia. I still have a tough time believing that they will elect someone equivalent in Japan or China…it is a sickness mostly in white dominated countries. The President of the Philippines may be nuts, but he is no racist!

  18. What a Trump Presidency Means for Interracial Couples?

There were white American women who held their noses and ran when non-white men asked them for a date before November 8, 2016, there are the same share of women who did the same after November 8, 2016 and there will be the same share who will do the same after today November 14, 2016 and after January 21, 2017 and after Trump leaves office. Black-white couples have been assaulted in the past and will be in the future on US soil. The question that now remains is whether assaults on Asian-white couples will increase in the future, or at the minimum the following becomes the norm….

    1. ‘White woman introduces Asian fiancé to disapproving parents’?
I could make more videos called ‘Chinese woman introduces foreign fiancé to disapproving parents’.

Such racism works both ways, depending on what country you are in.
I am acquainted with a number of non-Chinese men whose fiancés were forcibly married to a Chinese man because her parents did not ‘approve’ of their daughters choice.

Could it be that some Caucasian women were not attracted to Chinese/Asian men based on their personality rather than their skin colour, yet the very same Chinese/Asian men shout ‘racist’ when their advances were rebuffed?

In China it is not uncommon for non-Chinese men to be verbally abused, and some even assaulted by Chinese men when they are out socialising with their Chinese wife or gf. The women are also subject to verbal abuse by Chinese men.

Last year Jocelyn posted a blog on this topic.
      https://www.speakingofchina.com/china-articles/is-beijing-becoming-dangerous-for-couples-of-foreign-men-and-chinese-women/
The question is that will these assau

  19. @Amanda…based on politics so far, much higher chance of a Trump or Farage being elected in a white country than in China or Japan and please come back to me with evidence…web link from a place equivalent to New Jersey…Shanghai, Singapore, Tokyo or Beijing where Asian parents are forcing the fiancés of white men to marry Asian men.

When a Chinese or Japanese nationalist equivalent to Trump gets elected in one of those countries or an Asian nationalist becomes PM of Singapore, you all white people in America will have moral authority to discuss this issue. Until then Trump is your man…along with Senator Jeff Sessions who if he had an opportunity will ban visas even for legal foreign non-white spouses of white US citizens…biggest racist you will get in the US Senate! I do not think you have an equivalent to Senator Sessions in China or Japan and definitely not in Singapore whatever you say about Chinese families forcing their daughters to marry Chinese men. Finally, what is the ratio, one Chinese woman for 1.7 Chinese guys?

  20. “Could it be that some Caucasian women were not attracted to Chinese/Asian men based on their personality rather than their skin colour, yet the very same Chinese/Asian men shout ‘racist’ when their advances were rebuffed?”

Are you telling me that there are no good Chinese/Asian men and that most white men have better personality. If so , you are a racist!

Also please read the comments posted in your link. Then here is another link…

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jocelyn-eikenburg/why-wont-western-women-date-chinese-men_b_5827240.html

“Whenever I arrive at the airport in America, the first thing I notice is our men, how handsome and how tall they are,” one of my white female colleagues mentioned over lunch. “I’ll just stare at them for hours, as if I was Chinese and had never seen a foreign man before in my life.”

At least that woman wasn’t as blunt as another colleague, who used to bicycle with me through the streets of Zhengzhou. As we stopped on the corner of a side street and watched the mostly-male populous pedaling past us through the intersection, she grimaced.

“Chinese men don’t really seem that attractive.”

“How can you say that?” I asked her.

“I don’t know… they just aren’t.” She sounded too casual for a woman who just dismissed the entire male population in China”

Racist white women who probably voted for Trump!

    1. ‘Are you telling me that there are no good Chinese/Asian men and that most white men have better personality.’ LOL, not at all.

Many women choose a partner based on character, and to do so is not racist.
Maybe the ‘white women’ have only had the misfortune to encounter Asian men with what they would consider poor social skills that they don’t find attractive, yet they are called ‘racist’ by you. There are probably as many ‘white’ men with equally poor social skills.

If a woman chose to date only one type of man: maybe someone with a doctorate, or someone who liked a particular sport as much as she did, or someone who held the same values as she did, would you call her ‘exclusive’ or ‘discriminatory’ and would you say what she was doing was unfair to other men?

You can not force someone to like you are anyone else if there is a facet of them they don’t find attractive, and getting ‘hurt feelings’ if you or they are rebuffed is childish.

If someone came at me shouting ‘if you don’t date me you are a racist’ i would certainly not think that was attractive.

Would I be racist in refusing to date a man who came from Saudi Arabia and held the view that women should be covered from head to foot in public, and was not allowed drive, or allowed out without the permission of a male relative?
Or do you think i should be happy about having his attention?

If a man’s views and values are not compatible with mine, regardless of what ‘race’ he is from, i don’t think i would be interested in dating him at all.
      is this racist?
Or should i be forced to date him because his feelings would be hurt if i didn’t?

  21. “Maybe the ‘white women’ have only had the misfortune to encounter Asian men with what they would consider poor social skills that they don’t find attractive, yet they are called ‘racist’ by you. There are probably as many ‘white’ men with equally poor social skills.”

A university educated white woman who voted for Trump after the video was released has very low self-esteem as a woman or is more likely a virulent RACIST! No two ways about it.

“If a woman chose to date only one type of man: maybe someone with a doctorate, or someone who liked a particular sport as much as she did, or someone who held the same values as she did, would you call her ‘exclusive’ or ‘discriminatory’ and would you say what she was doing was unfair to other men?”

All these attributes can be changed. Skin color cannot be changed. So comparison is nonsense!

“You can not force someone to like you are anyone else if there is a facet of them they don’t find attractive, and getting ‘hurt feelings’ if you or they are rebuffed is childish.”

First amendment right, to call that person a racist. One has the right to call them childish, I have the right to call the person a racist.

“If someone came at me shouting ‘if you don’t date me you are a racist’ i would certainly not think that was attractive.”

No! If someone calls you a racist for not dating any non-white men, you probably are a racist. If you are dating non-white men, and this guy calls you a racist for not dating him, then he is a fool. As in the Trump University case scheduled to start in two weeks, the question is simple..is there any evidence that you are a racist?

“Would I be racist in refusing to date a man who came from Saudi Arabia and held the view that women should be covered from head to foot in public, and was not allowed drive, or allowed out without the permission of a male relative?”

No. But, you will be a racist for refusing to date a Christian Chinese man (assume you are ancestrally one…please forgive me if you are of another religion) who is fourth generation American with similar values just because you are different. Lot of people including Chinese do not date men from Saudi Arabia. Only foreign women who date Saudi men are after their money..no cultural compatibility.

“If a man’s views and values are not compatible with mine, regardless of what ‘race’ he is from, i don’t think i would be interested in dating him at all.
    is this racist?
Or should i be forced to date him because his feelings would be hurt if i didn’t?”

Nope. But voting for a many whose values are to treat women as sex objects even if he is white like you is racist considering he has heaped racial abuse on different races. The only reason you are voting for him is that although he is abusive towards women, he is still white!

    1. @ David, I notice you ignored my comment that there are MANY women who are ‘color blind’ and ignore or disregard ‘race’ when it comes to dating. Many women value character over skin color.

Jocelyn herself is an example of a woman who was attracted by character, to a man who happened to be Chinese, and there are many other ‘white’ women who are the same, valuing internal qualities over the superficial.

I know many mixed race couples who are happily married, and they clearly valued the compatibility of character, interests and values over something as superficial as skin color. And yes, when people get hung up about skin color, they are exhibiting racist tendencies.

If i chose not to date someone who I don’t feel culturally compatible with, regardless of skin color, does that make me racist?
Cultural incompatibility is not confined to people of different skin color – I could be culturally incompatible with a Caucasian from Sweden, Australia, the UK or Iceland – does that make me racist if i refuse to date them, because they are from different cultural backgrounds than me?

So it is a First Amendment right to call me a racist.

What is the difference between not wanting to date a Saudi, who has IMO questionable respect for women, and an Asian, who may have culturally incompatible ideas regarding women’s rights, or a Caucasian or African who may have culturally incompatible ideas regarding women’s rights?
What makes a woman more racist if these cultures have the same low opinion of women? Who is she more racist towards?
Would you call the same Caucasian woman a racist if she refused to date a Caucasian man who had zero respect for women?

As i am not American, you can feel free to express your opinions regarding the problems in the US.
So this means i had no say in the recent election.
And i love your automatic assumption that i am ‘white’.
Thankfully I come from a country that is not so hung up or challenged by different skin colors.

  22. @Amanda…one more note…virulently anti-immigrant folks expressing their views these days. Pat Buchanan says that they did not ask Americans permission to let in immigrants to change the phase of the country. But, they miss the point. In 1980 300,000 immigrants were admitted subject to quotas. Today the same numbers are admitted. What has changed? In 1980, 80,000 spouses and children of US citizens were admitted as immigrants. Today it is closer to 500,000 half of all immigrants admitted into the US…Many are white men married to Asian and Latina women. When Bannon, Breitbart and company find out about this, the number of assaults on Asian-white couples in American is going to go sky high, so much so that the incident in China will be an asterisk in an year’s time.

  23. “I notice you ignored my comment that there are MANY women who are ‘color blind’ and ignore or disregard ‘race’ when it comes to dating. Many women value character over skin color. ”

True of Asian women and particularly Asian-American women and even Latina women. Not really true of white women…then again Asians and Latinas are more than half the female population of the world. So it is very true!

“Jocelyn herself is an example of a woman who was attracted by character, to a man who happened to be Chinese, and there are many other ‘white’ women who are the same, valuing internal qualities over the superficial.”

Very true. But, such white women are very rare, pretty much confined to this board or the Texan in Tokyo board.

“I know many mixed race couples who are happily married, and they clearly valued the compatibility of character, interests and values over something as superficial as skin color. And yes, when people get hung up about skin color, they are exhibiting racist tendencies.”

Mostly AWWM couples. Very true. Involves probably 5-10% of white American women and even less, 1-2% of southern white women. As I have always said, let Asian guys try doing to white women in Tuscaloosa, AL (flirt with them or ask them for a date in large numbers) what a white man does to Asian women in Hong Kong or Singapore, let us see what happens to them. Especially in Donald Trump’s Alabama. Among the white women of Alabama skin color TRUMPS sexual abuse. Martha Roby withdrew her endorsement of Trump after his comments about women..make that white women. Guess what the white women in the GOP did to her..she barely won her re-election and she is done in 2018, unless the racist Jeff Sessions becomes defense secretary and she becomes a Senator through appointment..then she is done in 2020.80% of white women in Alabama voted for Trump. RACIST Alabama white women, most of them. End of story!

“Cultural incompatibility is not confined to people of different skin color – I could be culturally incompatible with a Caucasian from Sweden, Australia, the UK or Iceland – does that make me racist if i refuse to date them, because they are from different cultural backgrounds than me?”

No! But if you refuse to date an Asian guy (let us say for the sake of argument tall and weighing over 150 lbs) who is a fourth generation American and is culturally compatible to you but date a Swede from Sweden, you are a RACIST! Because skin color TRUMPS character as this election showed. Disgusting!

“What is the difference between not wanting to date a Saudi, who has IMO questionable respect for women, and an Asian, who may have culturally incompatible ideas regarding women’s rights, or a Caucasian or African who may have culturally incompatible ideas regarding women’s rights?
What makes a woman more racist if these cultures have the same low opinion of women? Who is she more racist towards?
Would you call the same Caucasian woman a racist if she refused to date a Caucasian man who had zero respect for women?”

Southern white men have the same contempt for women. But, the white women all voted for Trump. That makes them RACIST! I will believe the last sentence about white American women when they stop voting for people like Trump.

“As i am not American, you can feel free to express your opinions regarding the problems in the US.
So this means i had no say in the recent election.
And i love your automatic assumption that i am ‘white’.
Thankfully I come from a country that is not so hung up or challenged by different skin colors.”

Good for you! The only place with white majority that I have seen in the world where people may not be hung about skin color is Newfoundland and to some extent Manitoba, Canada.

  24. With crap she has been getting, I am sure she does not want to expose her kids to racism….which is bound to increase over the next four years in most parts of the US to say the least…..

    http://howibecametexan.com/2016/04/18/i-still-get-hate-mail-because-i-married-someone-who-isnt-white/

Wonder if it has anything to do with the election of Donald Trump. I am also afraid that many non-whites would not want to associate with whites at least here in the US. In the US most have been at least in speaking terms but know a lot of people in the UK who have been in the country for ten years and rarely interact with whites. Too bad!

  25. 1. Trump winning is bad news for USA, mainly because of the GOP’s anti science, pro cartel industry agenda.
    2. YES it has emboldended racists. not all people who voted for Trump were racist. But you have to ask yourself, over 15 other NORMAL republicans with very similar fiscal policies as Trump, why did you pick Trump in the primaries? Secondly, if ALL white supremacist groups are navigating towards trump and he hasnt rebuked them except for that one time he denied their existence, if he has a media person with no policy experience but lots of experience in stirring racism and sexism as his chief strategiest, THEN HE HAS A RACIST AGENDA even if he is not racist. If you voted for Trump, but not for racism then stand up and let him know that you dont want thrash like Bannon and Sessions and Flynn in the house.
    3. Racism in asia and west is very different. I have lived in asia for years. yes people have prejudice. But it is not based in contempt but in ignorance and it is not violent. We dont have a CONSISTENT movement like KKK or nazism going around calling ourselves children of god and looking down on other races. So here the western people saying “racism is everywhere just about perspective” need to realize the false equivalence they are making.

    1. Yes so much to the above^^^

This is happening, this is seriously f–ed up times, this is different from what is supposed to be appropriate in the 21st century; and saying “Trump isn’t racist he has black friends or whatever” or complaining about political correctness etc. is so very much missing the point.

  26. “Racism in asia and west is very different. I have lived in asia for years. yes people have prejudice. But it is not based in contempt but in ignorance and it is not violent. @SBC..as I have said again and again, when Japan and China elect a Trump or Mari Le Pen, or even someone like Theresa May or Amber Rudd, they can talk on equal terms with Asians regarding racism…until then, as far as racism is concerned whites win out big time!

  27. From Canada here:

I was very disappointed to learn through a telephone survey, a significant chunk of Albertans were “positive” about Trump.

Probably because locals hope for oil-gas economy recovery in our province. Our province is one of the most Conservative…in many ways compared to other provinces in Canada.

Trump victory has emboldened racists to articulate their opinions more loudly. It sets a bad precedent to other parts of the world. That’s how bad it is. Trump doesn’t give a poop about racism, misogynism, etc. He’s protecting his financial interests.

He’s lived a protected, privileged life is whole life.

    1. @ArunMeng are you only capable of vomiting pre-pubescent crap? So do you think that the black man who was stabbed while walking with his white gf in Seattle, or the mixed race couple who had their home vandalized and spray painted with swastikas, or the black guy who was brutally murdered by 3 white supremacists or the several hundred other instances of racial violence, are meaningless? By the sound of your name, you don’t seem white. I suppose you will pretend this is not an issue until you become a victim? Don’t respond with the regular cluster of meaningless words. What Jocelyn brings up is a real issue; one we shouldn’t be dealing with in this day and age.
