Awww, I like the guy that Anonymous describes! I don't even know him but he sounds really courageous to me. His English isn't that great, he's in a foreign country, and yet he's putting himself out there. And it sounds like he picked a nice girl to court - how cool that she went online looking for advice! I'm rooting for these two, I hope this relationship works out.

Glad you enjoyed the article! Changsha is definitely worth a trip. It still ranks as one of the favorite cities my husband and I visited last summer. Great Hunanese food, too! ;-)

Thanks for the comment, Priscilla! Wow, flooding -- what a nightmare to deal with, all by yourself. I hope everything is OK now.

Indeed, having friends you can count on makes such a difference. I wouldn't have survived that sprained ankle without my friends in China! :-)

It is absolutely handy to have a network of friends to rely on when needed. A freakish hail storm damaged our roof and ceiling last Saturday but because M, my other half was away at work, I had to deal with the flooding all by myself at the time. The nasty experience jolted me into realising the importance of having a list of people I could lean on.

Thanks for sharing your engagement/wedding experiences, Jennie! That's great that his family seems to agree it should be a simple affair in China.

Of course, my husband's family said they wanted it to be simple (简朴) -- but it was an elaborate affair, from my perspective. And they tried to tell me, it was simpler (because, traditionally, countryside weddings used to take 3 days). I guess perspective -- and expectations -- count when it comes to your wedding. ;-)

Thanks for sharing, Jennie! I think you illustrate the importance of being understanding in a cross-cultural couple -- that, sometimes, you just don't see eye-to-eye, and that's okay. Because, the love is more important than any political or news conflict ever could be (at least, from my perspective!).

Thanks for the comment, Jennie! It's so great to hear from other women who looked behind height to find love. Wow, so your husband lets you wear high heels, huh? I think mine would, but he likes to say they're "banned" (though, in reality, I really cannot wear high heels -- they hurt my feet too much).
