Many of us have wondered why it is you see so many white men with Chinese women, and not white women with Chinese men. Call it the AMWF question if you will.
But if we’re going to talk about this, you’d hope for an insightful conversation.
And “insightful” is not how I would describe this piece from Phoenix News, the Chinese media outlet owned by Rupert Murdoch. Maybe we shouldn’t have expected much, given that Phoenix owes its existence to the same man who created Fox News.
The following is my English translation of the the original piece in Chinese, which is rife with overgeneralizations, stereotypes and worse:
In life, sometimes we across some beautiful mixed-race babies. Thick eyebrows. Big eyes. There are some whose hair is even golden.
Their mothers are usually Chinese and the fathers are foreigners.
For a minority of these babies, the fathers are Chinese and the mothers are foreigners, but this is also true a tiny fraction of the time.
Why is it that there are so few foreign women who look for Chinese men? In this case, the foreign women we speak of normally are white European American women.
Among Asian countries such as Japan and South Korea, there are quite a few women who want to marry Chinese men. Add to that in recent years the fact that rural Chinese men getting mail-order brides from Vietnam is a common occurrence.
So why is it that so few white European American women will go for Chinese men?
Originally, in current Chinese society, even though there is already equality between men and women, there are always some men who still have a certain male chauvinism and don’t respect women.
But the vast majority of foreign women are more independent, so [relationships between foreign women and Chinese men] are destined not to happen.
In addition, Chinese men are often quite reserved. Many Chinese men are quite low-key and conservative when it comes to relationships. They believe only dull [expressions] are genuine.
But almost all foreign women prefer a romantic and exciting life.
Our culture and ways of thinking are different, so naturally foreign women and Chinese men cannot live together.
Besides all of this, the aesthetic sensibilities of foreign women are different from Chinese women.
With all the blue-eyed and blonde men with tall noses that they’re accustomed to in their surroundings, when these foreign women suddenly look upon the typical Asian faces of Chinese men, it’s unavoidable that there will be some who are blind to these faces.
Plus, the average build of Chinese men doesn’t appear nearly as strong as that of foreign men, who have eaten beef since they were young. And foreign women care more about a man’s healthy physique.
So they will rarely choose to marry Chinese men.
In addition, there are issues in terms of religion and beliefs as well as living habits, but these reasons are not that important.
After all, love knows no borders.
You know, you’ve got to hand it to Phoenix for ending the piece on such a conciliatory note – as if “love knows no borders” could somehow excuse the rest of this piece that’s far beyond cringeworthy.
Phoenix News, do us all a favor and stop writing about why so few white women date Chinese men. Please.

I disagree with this article. If you look at Chinese men East European female marriages, it is very common.
In 2003 Researches held by Olga Makhovskaya reveal ” marriages between Chinese men and Russian women are also very successful. There are tens of thousands of such marriages in Russia’s Primorye region in the Far East.
Chinese men marriages with Russian women were so common in the past ( although most women living in poverty, this is facts ) that are Chinese writers exaggerating the estimates. Zhang mentioned since 1918 about one million Russian women had already married Chinese men. Citing a newspaper report that over one million Russian women on the borders had married Chinese men after the Russian Revolution.
” After the Russian Civil War, a huge number of Russians settled in the Manchuria region of China. One Chinese scholar Zhang Jingsheng wrote essays in 1924 and 1925 in various Chinese journals praising the advantages of miscegenation between Russians and Chinese, saying that interracial sex would promote greater understandings between the two peoples, and produce children with the best advantages of both peoples.[186] Zhang argued that Russians were taller and had greater physical strength than the Han, but the Chinese were gentler and kinder than the Russians, and so intermarriage between the two peoples would ensure children with the advantages of both.[186] Zhang wrote that the Russians were a tough “hard” people while the Chinese had a softer physique and more compassion, and miscegenation between the two would only benefit both.[186] Zhang mentioned since 1918 about one million Russian women who had already married Chinese men and argued already the children born of these marriages had the strength and toughness of the Russians and the gentleness and kindness of the Chinese.[186]
In Japan, it is the same sort of feeling.

Any news outlet in Chinese clothes but owned by a non Chinese person would always spread something like this. Shanghaiist dotcom is a similar one. My question is why did they do that? They can easily land on average Chinese girls and not the other way around.

Um…if there are “always some men who still have a certain male chauvinism and don’t respect women”, then there is NOT equality between men and women in Chinese society. I mean, the two concepts can’t coexist. Either there is equality, in which case the second statement is false, or the second statement is true, and there is not equality.
This isn’t just true of China, of course, it’s a global issue. I see it in the country of my birth (the US) and the country where I live (Taiwan).
And the rest of it is basically garbage.
There are some culture barriers that can be difficult to overcome, but the across-the-board stereotypes that all Chinese men exemplify those stereotypes (or that all foreign women do) is ridiculous.
The assumption that white male (“blond haired and blue eyed”) faces are automatically more handsome than Asian ones alone sinks the whole piece. Ridiculous. I met the person who I feel is the most charismatically attractive man alive* on Saturday and he is Asian! I have a HUGE crush on him and have had for ages!**
*I mean obviously I think my husband is more handsome, but in terms of having a magnetic charisma…well, my husband is a low-key guy. I like that and even prefer it, but I’m just talking about a different sort of attractiveness.
**My husband is well aware of the crush and thinks it’s funny in the way any celebrity crush (the guy is pretty famous) is funny and not threatening.

How often is the image of ‘depraved’ Caucasian men and ‘slutty’ Caucasian women, also think of the ‘dirty’ African stereotype, all propagated in news media opinion pieces, not to mention their portrayal in mainstream tv shows?
this sort of ‘propaganda’ of the ‘other’ or ‘foreigner’ is not all one way.
As a Philippine-American who can pass for “Chinese,” “Japanese,” and even “Korean,” I do not find the above article particularly troubling. Not in the least. Sure, it might be rife with inaccuracies, but that has no bearing on me as an individual nor do I believe that being Asian/Filipino/or looking “Chinese” has adversely affected my ability to date. But my “ordinary” looks, a relatively “short” physical stature, and especially a general “lack of interest,” most definitely, at least in my view! And seriously, folks, does anyone here really expect the average Chinese journalist to think and write like American political leftists on matters of interracial relationships? In fact, it appears more likely that the piece merely reflects the conventional thinking among its readership, while being completely irrelevant to their daily lives.

Particularly in AZ, they do not mention that. These white women wont date any non-white men. Why? Look at their congressional reps..Joe Arpaio, Kerri White, Martha McSally, Trent Franks, Paul Gosar and Jan Brewer, all white supremacists only to name a few. McSally has a bill to cut immigration to the US by 25%. That is only the first step. Eventually their goal is to make it difficult for spouses of US citizens to migrate..particularly if it is a white female-Asian male couple. Kerri White and Martha McSally will be leading the charge along with Joe Arpaio!
Uh, “David,” I hope you realize that Phoenix News has nothing to do with Phoenix, AZ or the state, in general….And labeling certain people you disagree with, as “white supremacists” further reduces the credibility of your views. Incidentally, I did a little background research on this media entity and found that they generally serve the Chinese community at home and abroad, and given the fact that whatever they broadcast or publish has to go through Chinese government censorship, it is clear that media censors there have no issue with the opinions expressed regarding Chinese male and White female dating. Neither do I, by the way. And in all likelihood, Rupert Murdoch is not even aware of this or do you not know how many firms fall under his control? Do you think he actually keeps tabs on all the news broadcast and published by his companies?

But when it comes to Asian men, there seems to be a visceral resentment against them being with white women. I wonder why…

Our ideas and ways of life are changing constantly. Of course, a boring , skinny, weak asian man can blossom into an exciting, outspoken, masculine and muscular guy anyday. Our schedules and job depend so much from us that we feel so numb at the end of the day. The bottom line is we all want to look and feel attractive. It’s human nature. For example, if i can’t go to the gym because of lack of time, I bring the gym to me. You have to know that the media is controlled by interested groups. They will try to influence you on your thoughts and I think you guys know who are those special interested groups.
You know all I see here is that Chinese / asian men are being compared with other men all the time and put down each other . How can you compare humans like this without knowing their personalities ? Well, asian men age better though . We look 10-15 yrs younger than our age on avg. Our financial statements look much better than avg men. We believe in families , marriage and having loving, supportive families. Our divorce rates are lower. Our avg incomes are much higher than others. we don’t go into debts like most people. I know that having a weak body can be fixed and I’m proof of that . Freaking it’s always romance and excitements I hear! Well, after chasing a woman for a while and being married for a while , the romance and excitement diminished down to zero. That’s why foreign women or any women need to realize that you also need to tell what you like and what you expect . Knowing that not all men are romantic and exciting , you can build something out of nothing. We’re talking about serious dating here that will end up in a committed relationship. If you ‘re talking about hookups like in America and other western countries, then don’t expect men to give you excitement and romance.Hookups can last from a day to a few weeks. Men are very smart nowadays. Men don’t want to marry anymore hint hint. Why ? After divorce , we have to give you women half of our wealth. Most men are scared to get married.
I don’t know about other European countries, but in Romania pork is far more popular than beef [because it’s also cheaper, i believe?] Chicken and pork are the meats we eat the most. We also drink a lot of milk [or at least my family did and does].

I think the main reason Western women don’t really date Asian men is because of their height – most women I heard talking about ideal man, would say ‘someone taller than them’.. American women are generally shorter i believe, than European women, so they shouldn’t have much issues in this regard.
I know people in Romania are generally racist [i am a bit racist myself, but not against Asian nor Black people and I started to question the reasons why.. i think it’s because I saw my parents having a racist attitude, and i just copied them].. if others had a similar experience to mine, it’s no wonder they wouldn’t consider individuals of other races as their partners.. 🙁
The more traditional roles in the Chinese [as well as other East Asian countries] can put Western women off from dating men from those cultures.

What the article said is not true at all. I travel widely and I can tell you that more and more Asian men are marrying out. This is rising and rising fast. Previously, the main reason that people don’t see Asian men marrying to non-Asian women is because Asian men are the inheritors of the family lineage. Asian women are not. Because of that, we are expecting by our parents to continue the tradition of marrying wives from our races to perpetuate our family lineage. This has changed however giving the extra male population in East Asia such as in China and South Korea. As a result, many of us are marrying out with our parental approval. In addition, with the rise of China, more and more women around begin to take notice of the rising image of the Asian men as intelligent and higher income. This also leads to the rising interracial marriage between Asian men and non-Asian women.
You can google on youtube videos by “Lenaaround” or “We the Kims” or “The Anna Marie” or “Cantonese Couple” or “Joanna 99” or “AKALoveStory” or “LaVieJollie” or “Taemin&Katie” or “Rice&Potato” or “Sery” or “Le Fleunox” or “Farina Jo”..etc.. There are many white girls and/or non-Asian girls marrying to us. I can also assure you that this is just the beginning. There will be more and more AMWF couples to come in the near future.

There are many AMWF couples actually. What people have seen so far is only the tip of the iceberg. Many AMWF couples are not even bother to make videos so it is far more common than people think. My brother, for example already married to a white girl and I am seeing a Latina.

It is not because I am Asian and I am trying to flatter Asian here but the truth is we Asian men are very very capable. We may look soft outside but we are steel inside. Regardless of whatever Western stereotypes and propaganda, we still stand out. We have the highest IQ among all races. It is the brain that matters the most. Physical size only comes secondary. As the old saying, the pen is mightier than the sword.
For example, in the US, Asian men leads the pack in terms of highest education and income and leaves white men behind by a wide margin. In California alone, more than 50% of all engineers are Asian Americans. The Silicon Valley, Boeing and NASA are full of Asian Americans. In addition, Asian Americans have the highest Nobel Price winners per capita. We dominate science and technology and healthcare industries. If we can achieve these things, dating non-Asian women is nothing to us. The main reason we did not date outside of our culture in the past was because we are more traditional and responsible to perpetuate family lineage.
The time has changed however, and many of us begin to marry out. More and more will follow. I noticed that there are more Asian guys hanging out with non-Asian women in colleges nowsaday. It was not like that ten years or so ago. The Asian Century or in particular the Chinese Century is coming and with it, the rising image of the Asian men. I travel widely around the world and I can tell you that most of the non-Asian people in the world today treat Asian men with respect and dignity. When I was a kid, I saw Asians serving other non-Asians in hotels and other service industries. Now, it is the other way around. So, the image of the Asian men is rising and rising fast. Cheer!!!

Is there a central place, or group, where white women can meet Asian, especially, Chinese men? My daughter is finishing her Master’s in England, and wants to get back to Asia and find a husband (if she can find a job there). Any dating sites any of you could recommend? She is very petite (4’11”), 28, and very smart. She speaks some Mandarin and Cantonese from living in Hong Kong for school, although her minor was Japanese (but she likes China/HK better now that she lived in both countries). She is quiet, but has a good sense of humor. I keep telling her to go online to find someone, but I, personally, don’t know of any sites that match white /western women with Asian men. She is from California but prefers men from China, not Asian-American. She has only dated Asian men (so far Chinese and Mongolian). Any recommendations or ideas? She is particularly interested in returning to Hong Kong when she graduates soon. Thanks for any leads. 🙂

The tide of AM/WF has been rising in many places, both in Asia and in the West, in the last 10 to 15 years! In my social circle (I live in the Philippines), I know a few dozen peeps who were/are involved in the scene (whether through ONS/FUBU/relationships/marriages). Interestingly, the majority of WFs I have personally met in real life involved with local men in the Philippines are Europeans (particularly Russian, French, British, and German ones).
I don’t agree with Edward’s bragging about Asians ” have the highest IQ among all races”. I believe he was swayed by the success of some selected members who were decent in technical fields but just happen to disregard the numerous other average Asians who did not. As a veteran electronic engineer with a long career in the industry, I have witnessed exceptionally intelligence from ALL racial group. There is no scientific evidence to prove that any particular ethnic/racial group has the unique possession of super IQ.
In my case, I was attracted to science because it was the most expedient way to a professional job for somebody who had no high society connections, being smaller than the average white American man but didn’t want to relive the poverty that I experienced in my childhood. Some Asians do have the advantage of having traditional family pressure which pushes Asian kids to show academic success, whereas many other ethnic groups are more relaxed when it comes to such “pushes”. Go look at the roster of the scientific staff at the world famous Jet Propulsion Lab and one would be very humbled at the racial background all those numerous PhDs in very difficult fields like astrophysics. Do Asians have a majority there? It turns out that the answer is “no”.
Dan Yeh, apparently you are the one that is bragging and misinformed and not me. You should know very well that most Asian students are on the top ten in schools despite the low Asian population. On average Asian has higher IQ than other races. You can google information for yourself if you want but here is a good example for you. Talk to an Asian student and then talk to another student of similar level from another race and compare the results and you will find out the difference. I do not look down on any race but I have tons of experiences in dealing with people from different ethnicities. Although intelligence exists in all race, however, on average Asians have higher IQ than whites. You mentioned about the Jet Propulsion Lab but do you know that one of the three cofounders of the Jet Propulsion Lab is an Asian man? In fact, he was the major one and the director of the JPL at the time. It was Qian Xuesan who was the famous Chinese American who proposed to the US government to create this lab. Later on, because of his race, he was distrusted and demoted. He was even put into house arrest. Finally, he came back to China and became the father of the Chinese atomic bomb and space program. He was also the one who interviewed and selected the German scientist, Werner von Braun after WWII and invited him back to work for the US. This German scientist later became the father of American Space Program. Also, you should know, America is very race sensitive. Jet Propulsion Lab is one of the highly classified labs so if you are an Asian American, the chance of you getting employed is very low giving the historical distrust. Besides, not that many Asians are interest in Astrophysics. We are more interest in high tech and medicine. You should know this very well so this is the reason why you may not see many Asian Americans working there. However, you can come to California and see for yourself in the Silicon Valley how many Asian are there. As an engineer, you should know that almost 40-50% of all engineers in California are Asians. Boeing and NASA also have lots of Asian scientists working there. If you compare Asian per capita, then there are more Asians working in these highly technical areas than other race. In addition, Bloomberg also reported recently that it is Asian men that are in the lead in having the highest income and education in the US and leave white men by a wide margin. This is not bragging but fact and you can google on Youtube for yourself. Furthermore, you should also know that your generation is different from the current Asian generation. My generation for instance, having one or two doctoral degrees are very common. You should research more and prove to yourself.
I have had the opportunity to work with, supervised and recruited many Asian engineers. Just like any other ethnicity, there are many capable ones and then there are many, many other “average” performers. When I visited the local universities here in CA I was not surprised to see many Asians studying hard on Friday nights when whites, in particular, will go out for some socialization. Many of us Asians made it not because we are ultra smart, but we were willing to work for it. It is NOT true that in government agencies, Asians were denied employment because they were suspected. I was granted higher level clearances for cryptography and nuclear weapon design when I was with the Defense Department decades ago, and only one Jewish gentleman voiced his suspicion in all that time. I had come across many very smart whites “techies” and certainly wouldn’t ran around and brag that we Asians have the cornered the market for intelligence. The ethnicity of the workers often had to do with the geographic location, with much less Asian participation in states in the upper Mid West, Missouri and Pennsylvania, or example.
Dan Yeh, apparently, your experiences contradicted what you said. Your style of writing and your experiences indicated that most likely, you are not Asian but a white guy. It is very obvious that you are the one running around and bragging about your white race while trying to undermine Asian. You said that there are many “average” Asian performers but conveniently forget about the many “average” white performers. Yet these average Asian performers are still performing better than those “average whites”. I hired both Asian and whites myself and most of the time, Asians have higher qualifications than whites. Yet, they were still being turned down much more often than whites. I also work with colleagues from all different ethnicities- Asian, Black, White, Hispanic and again, Asians are still the best performers most of the time. Unlike you, I base my experiences and judgement on meritocracy and not on race. Many of us Asians because of our tradition, prefer to be humbled and said we are working harder instead of saying we are more intelligent. Sure, Asians work very hard but we are also very capable and intelligent. I even have whites admitted to me that they are “B” students whereas Asians are “A” students. When we talk about IQ, we refer to the average IQ of the group and not the individual. However, the average IQ for Asians are still higher than that of whites. Regarding what you said about employment opportunity, what a joke! Everybody knows how race sensitive America is. If there are 2 candidates with the same qualifications and one is Asian and the other is white. Most likely, the white candidate will get the position. This is the very reason why Blacks have to fight for Affirmative Action because otherwise, there will be no Blacks or Hispanics in the managerial position at all. Government agencies and private institutions have the unspoken rule of preferentially hiring whites for higher level. This is what we called “Institutional Discrimination.” This is why they always ask for your ethnicity so they can screen you conveniently. You should know the story about Elvis Presley and how he came about. Here is another example, a few years ago, there was a Taiwanese American man got accused for leaking sensitive data and got arrested. Later on, he was vindicated and his daughter decided to go to law school. This was all over the news. So much for your theory of “no suspicion”. Get real and don’t be in a self denial mode anymore.
